Extra gentle care for their gums and teeth

Just like adults, children need regular teeth cleanings and dental exams to stay healthy. These appointments help remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria that can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and chronic bad breath. They also support the healthy development of your child’s permanent teeth.

Our kid friendly dental team uses special tools and techniques to clean areas that children often miss during brushing and flossing at home. After a thorough cleaning, we will check on their overall oral health, track progress, and offer personalized tips to help you care for their teeth between visits.

Routine teeth cleanings help children:
  • Keep both baby and adult teeth healthy and strong
  • Prevent gum disease and maintain good oral health
  • Track progress through growth and development
  • Build a positive relationship with the dentist
  • Learn how to care for their teeth at home
  • Create lifelong habits for a healthy smile

What happens during a children’s teeth cleaning?

We begin by reviewing your child’s chart and history so we can check for specific concerns or patterns. If needed, we may take X-rays or recommend fluoride or sealants for new adult teeth. Our team will speak with your child in a kid friendly and reassuring way, asking if they have any questions or concerns about their teeth.

Gum health

Healthy gums are the foundation for a healthy smile. Children can develop gum inflammation and early gum disease just like adults, especially during times of rapid change like losing baby teeth or getting new adult teeth. We will examine the soft tissues in their mouth and give gentle guidance on brushing and flossing.

Plaque and tartar removal

Plaque is a soft, sticky film that starts building up as soon as teeth come in. If it is not removed, it hardens into tartar, which is more difficult to clean at home. Plaque and tartar can lead to cavities, especially in the spaces between teeth and near the gums. Our hygienist will gently remove buildup and may follow with a fluoride treatment to help protect enamel.

Watching for milestones

Each child follows a unique dental timeline. Most children get their first baby teeth between 6 months and 1 year, and they continue losing baby teeth and gaining adult teeth through their teen years. During each appointment, we will check on the growth of new teeth, the loss of baby teeth, and any early signs of crowding, spacing, or delay.

to schedule an initial consultation & exam.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Children should have their teeth cleaned and examined every 6 months, just like adults. Some may benefit from more frequent visits, such as every 3 or 4 months. We recommend not waiting longer than a year between appointments.

Do not wait. If you are concerned about your child’s teeth or oral health, please schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Early care is always better than waiting for a problem to grow.

Children may not always explain when something feels wrong. Here are some signs to watch for:

  • Frequently touching or shielding their face or mouth
  • Flinching when others come near their face
  • Swelling, redness, or dark spots on the gums or teeth
  • Avoiding hot, cold, chewy, or crunchy foods
  • Chewing on only one side of the mouth
  • Fever or general irritability without an obvious reason

Most appointments take between 30 minutes and 1 hour. The length depends on your child’s comfort level and how many questions they have. We take our time with anxious or curious kids to make sure they feel safe and supported.

  • Start brushing as soon as their first tooth comes in
  • Use a soft bristled toothbrush and age appropriate toothpaste
  • Encourage your child to brush twice a day and help them floss daily
  • Avoid sugary drinks and snacks, especially before bed
  • Offer a variety of healthy, crunchy foods like fruits and vegetables
  • Be a role model by brushing and flossing your own teeth

After fluoride treatment, wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking. This gives the fluoride time to absorb into the enamel and provide maximum benefit.

I have been going to Dr Jason Teerlink since he began practicing several years ago. His knowledge and concern for each patient is what I like best about his practice. I’ve had some difficult to diagnose issues, but he never let me down and will continue to work with me to find the best solution for my dental needs. His office staff is also amazing! I love the beautiful and modern office as well. It’s in a great location for me. Don’t hesitate to contact their office for your dental health needs.
