Candidates for Dentures
Did you know that nearly one in four adults over the age of 65 are missing all of their natural teeth? Dentures are a reliable and time tested solution. In fact, they are often so discreet that you may have spoken with someone wearing dentures without even realizing it.
You may be a good candidate for dentures if you:
- Want to replace several or all of your teeth
- Do not smoke or use tobacco products
- Have a healthy jawbone (we can help assess this)
- Do not suffer from chronic dry mouth
- Are willing to care for your dentures daily at home
- Continue to see your dentist for regular checkups
How to Care For Your Dentures
Proper care helps keep your dentures clean, comfortable, and long lasting. It also supports your overall oral health. During your dental visits, we will assess how your dentures are fitting and check your gums, tongue, and jaw for any concerns.
At home, follow these tips:
- Remove your dentures at night to let your mouth rest
- Soak them in warm water with or without a denture cleanser
- Avoid soaking dentures with metal clasps in anything but warm water
- Never use hot water, which can warp the material
- Keep dentures in water when not in use to prevent drying out
- Clean and gently massage your gums daily
- If a toothbrush feels uncomfortable, use warm water to soften the bristles or clean with a soft cloth
- If you have partial dentures, brush your natural teeth as usual

You can sleep with your dentures in, but it is better not to. Removing them at night allows your gums and jaw to rest and gives you the chance to clean your mouth thoroughly.

If you are unsure about your fit, we are happy to assess your dentures and make any needed adjustments.
Once you get used to your dentures, you should be able to eat most foods. However, it is wise to be cautious with:
- Hard foods like raw carrots or tough meat
- Sticky treats such as caramel
- Foods with small particles like popcorn or seeded crackers
These can irritate your gums or shift your dentures. Enjoy them occasionally, and always eat with care.
